A wheeled excavator — also called a wheel excavator or tyred excavator — is an excavator mounted on a rubber-tyred undercarriage instead of steel tracks. It uses the same boom, arm and bucket as a crawler machine, but travels on its own wheels.
The main consequence is mobility: a wheeled excavator can drive on public roads (subject to local rules) and reposition between short jobs without a low-loader, which lowers transport cost and turnaround time.
